Several events in Egypt's cultural and heritage calendar are unique to specific dates or seasons. Some are purely astronomical — events the ancient architects designed into the buildings themselves. Others are cultural festivals or archaeological access windows that our network allows us to arrange attendance at in advance.
22 February & 22 October — Abu Simbel Sun Festival
Twice yearly, the rising sun penetrates the 65-metre corridor of Ramesses II's Great Temple at Abu Simbel to illuminate three of the four seated deities in the inner sanctuary. The effect lasts approximately 20 minutes and was deliberately engineered by the ancient architects — and remarkably, was preserved when the temple was relocated in the 1960s. Attendance on these dates is significant; our access service pre-books flights from Aswan and ensures positioning at the site by 05:30 to secure unobstructed viewing. Minimum booking notice: 90 days for these dates.
March — Luxor African Film Festival
The Luxor African Film Festival takes place annually in March at cinemas and outdoor venues in Luxor and the surrounding area. Screenings occur against the backdrop of the Theban hills. We arrange evening programmes incorporating screenings alongside afternoon site visits, making it possible to combine cultural heritage tourism with contemporary African cinema in an extraordinarily atmospheric setting. The festival also hosts exhibitions, discussions with directors and producers, and evening events on the banks of the Nile.
November — International Moulid of Abu el-Haggag, Luxor
The Moulid of Abu el-Haggag is a major Islamic festival celebrating the local saint whose mosque sits atop Luxor Temple's ancient court. Celebrated on the Islamic lunar calendar (timing shifts annually), the moulid involves processions through the historic city centre, boat-shaped floats echoing the ancient opet festival processions, music, and communal gatherings. The visual connection between the pharaonic tradition and the living Islamic city is nowhere more vivid than during this event. We arrange appropriate escorted attendance for visiting groups with an Arabic-speaking cultural liaison.
Spring — Grand Egyptian Museum Exhibition Rotations
The GEM rotates objects from its reserve collection into temporary exhibition spaces typically in March–April and September–October. These rotations include objects not on permanent display, sometimes including material from ongoing excavations. Our newsletter (available to all Expedition and Immersion clients) covers these rotations as they are announced by the museum's academic office. For clients planning a visit in spring, we coordinate with our GEM contact to confirm which temporary exhibitions will be current during their dates.

For Nile cruise planning
The Nile is comfortable for cruising from October to April. Summer cruising on a dahabiya in the early morning and evening is possible but requires careful scheduling of shore excursions to avoid midday heat. Felucca travel is most pleasant November through March when evening temperatures on the river are genuinely cool.
For family visits
November, February, and March are the most suitable months for families with children. School holiday periods (Christmas, Easter, UK half-terms) coincide with peak crowds; if possible, travel in the weeks immediately before or after these windows. October is an excellent shoulder-season choice for school-age families.
We match your available dates to the best conditions and events Egypt has to offer that season — including access to special events our standard contacts make possible.
